Pillars of Islam

The Prophet, peace be upon him, said, " Islam is based on five: Shahadah (testimony), Iqamat as-Salat (to offer the compulsory prayer), to pay Zakat, Hajj for whoever is able to do so, and to observe Saum (fasting)."
(Bukhari and Muslim)

These five things are like pillars that support the buildings' roof. Destruction one of these pillars, roof will cause losing balance and collapse as a result. Same for Islam. Denying one of the Islam's pillars, will get a person out of Islam circle.

Shahadah (The Testimony of Islam)

Shahadah is the first pillar of Islam which means to testify that there is no God except Allah and that Mohammad is His messenger. It has a specific meaning which the Muslim should not only know but also practice sincerely.

First Part / (There is no God except Allah)

1. This testimony means that there is none on the earth not in the Heavens that deserves to be worshipped except Allah alone. Seeking to gain Allah's consent or asking for His help can not be achieved by worshipping other that Allah, but it only be attained by serving Allah alone., glorifying the good deeds that He commanded us to do, such as praying (Salat), fasting (Siyam), fighting for His cause (Jihad), performing pilgrimage (Hajj), kind treatment of the parents... etc.

2. Worshipping has different forms, of them is supplication (Du'a) which means to ask for something that no one can grant except Allah. Allah ordered His bondsmen to supplicate Him alone for whatever they may need when He said in the meaning of: "Invoke me, I will respond to you, Verily! Those scorn My worship they will surely enter Hell"

3. offering sacrifices and votive offerings are also services which should be consecrated for Allah alone. Allah said in the meaning of: "May Allah curse whoever offers a sacrifice to anyone other than Him".

4. Calling for help, asking for refuge, and invoking for support are also among the forms of divine services. Allah said in the meaning of : "You alone we worship and to you Alone we ask help". The Prophet, peace be upon him, said in the meaning of :"If you ask for anything ask for it from Allah alone, if you seek it from Allah alone.". It is permissible for a person to ask for his fellow brother's help or support if the matter which he asks for in within the scope of human ability. But if such matter is beyond that, the Muslim must not ask for help from anyone except Allah. As for those who pretend to know what is hidden in the future, they are unbelievers. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said :"Whoever goes to a fortune-teller and believes in what he says, disbelievers in what had been revealed to Mohammad".

5. Trust (Tawakul), submissiveness, and hope (Raja) are also forms of worship. A person should never trust, hope, nor submit to anyone except Allah.

6. The wicked pretenders using deviated interpretations, false traditions imputed top the Prophet, misled by lust, satanic dreams, and all other forms of misguidance, call people to believe in the intercession of pious (spiritual) persons and thus support idolatry by all means.

7. Taking graves as places of worship, constructing them with curtains (covers), or performing prayer therein, all are flagrant forms of heresy and are strictly prohibited by Allah and His Apostle. Allah sent His messengers to call the people to abandon worshipping any deity except Him.

Second Part / (Mohammad is His messenger)

To knowledge that Mohammad is the messenger of Allah means:
1. Know and believe sincerely that Prophet Mohammad is the Messenger whom Allah sent to all mankind. Allah said in the meaning of: "O mankind, verily, I am sent to you all as the messenger of Allah."

2. He must be followed, obeyed and not denied as Allah said in the meaning of: "And whatever the messenger give you, take it, and whatever he forbids you, abstain from it."

3. He is the servant of Allah.
4. No one would be a believer unless he submits to the judgments of Prophet. The prophet, peace be upon him, said in the meaning of: "Whoever performs a deed that is not in conformity with our principles, his deeds will be rejected".
