ZAKAT
Zakat is an obligatory charity due on wealth, with certain conditions, and to be distributed to specific groups of people at specific time.
Zakat is a pillar of Islam and one of its most important components. It is mentioned and linked to Salat in a great number of places in the Book of Allah, the Almighty.
The Muslim have agreed indisputably that Zakat is obligatory. Whoever denies its obligatory nature after knowing this, is a Kafir, outside the fold of Islam. And whoever is miserly, withholding some of or all of it, then he is an unjust oppressor, befitting of punishment.
Among the proofs of its obligatory nature are the Statements of Allah, the Almighty, "And offer prayers perfectly (Iqamat-as-Salat) and give Zakat...) (V. 2:110)
And Allah, the Almighty, said: "And they were commanded not, but that they should worship Allah, and worship none but Him Alone (abstaining from abscribing partners to Him), and offer prayers perfectly ( Iqamat-as-Salat) and give Zakat abd thet is the right religion." (98:5)
Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them, said: "The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "Islam in based on five" and he mentioned ... " to give Zakat."
Bukhari reported that when the Prophet, peace be upon him, sent Mu'adh to Yemen, he said: "And if they obey you in that, inform them that Allah has obligated them with Zakat to be taken from their rich and distributed among their poor."
And it is disbelief of the one who refuses to pay it claiming it not necessary, as Allah, the Almighty, said: "But if they repent, offer prayers perfectly (Iqamat-as-Salat) and give Zakat, then they are your brethren in religion." (V. 9:11)
It can be understood from these verses that the one who doesn't establish Salat nor does he pay Zakat, he is not our brother in the religion, rather he is a disbeliever. For that reason Abu Bakr, May Allah be pleased with him, fought those who differentiated between Salat and Zakat regarding their obligatory nature. And the Sahabah agreed with his decision and carried it out, so it proves their consensus on the issue.
The Wisdom in the legislation of Zakat
There is great wisdom in the institution of Zakat, as it fulfills many major aims of the Shari'ah resulting general benefits, which becomes clear to one who ponders the texts of the Qur'an and Sunnah that order for its payment; for instance, the Ayat of Surah At-Taubah which explains where the Zakat should be distributed, and other verses and Ahadith which encourage charity and spending for good causes in general. Among the aspects of this wisdom are:
1. Purification of the believer's soul from the stains of sins and transgressions and their negative effects on the hearts, and the cleaning of his soul from the despicable qualities of miserliness and stinginess and their effects. Allah, the Almighty, said: "Take Sadaqah (alms) from their wealth in order to purify them and sanctify them." (V. 9:103)
2. To fulfill the requirements of the poor Muslims and to preserve his honour from the humiliation of asking other than Allah.
3. Lightning the burden of the Muslim debtor by helping to pay off his debts.
4. To join disparate hearts on belief and Islam, bringing them from a state of doubts and spiritual uneasiness and weak faith to firmly rooted faith and complete certainty.
5. Equipping fighters in the way of Allah and preparing the military equipment and material for the spread of Islam and for the defeat of disbelief and corruption, and for the establishment of justice between the people the people until the is no more Fatnah (Shirk in its beguiling and confusing manifestations) so that religion (worship) be exclusive for Allah Alone in the whole of the world.
6. Helping the stranded Muslim traveller to complete his journey; Zakat what he needs to get back home.
7. Purification of wealth and its increase and protection from ruin through the blessing incurred by the obedience of Allah, and the aggrandizement of His order; and kindness to His creatiion.
This is some of the sublime wisdom and noble purposes for which Zakat was mandated. And there are much more, no one comprehends all of them except Allah, the Almighty.
