Abdulla Ibn Abbass

He was the first to read the Quran publicly.
-- [Who ever wants to read the quran “fresh” as revealed, had to read it on Ibn Oummi Abd’s way] the prophet (Peace be upon him).
-- He was so young at that time, and used to walk alone far away from home, looking after a cattle belonging to one of quraish’s masters: Okba ibn Abi Mu’ayt.

People used to call him: “Ibn Oummi Abd”, his name was Abdullah, and his father’s name was “Massoud”.

The kid had heard about the prophet’s news, but without paying any sound attention to that. First, he was a so young boy and second, he got no time for that; most of the time he got out at the early morning and came back only after the sunset.

Once it happened that the kid “Abdullah Ibn Massoud” glanced so far two old men looking so respectful, so tired and thirsty, coming straight to him. Once they arrived to him, they greeted him and said:

-         “Son, get us some of the cattle’s milk to drink, we are so thirsty”.

The kid replied:

-         “I can’t do it, the cattle is not mine”.

The two men did not deny that to him. Instead, they looked satisfied to hear such an answer, and one of them continued: “ show me a “virgin” sheep” and the kid immediately pointed to one, that the man went to catch, and started massaging its udder, on mentioning on it the name of Allah. The kid got so astonished and inquired when has it ever happen that a “virgin” sheep give milk? So the sheep udder got swollen and become full of milk. The two men drank what they need of it and give the still astonished kid some of it. Once they got full, the blessed man ordered the udder to get shrank as it was. At that time the kid asked the man to teach him how to do that next time by himself, and the man replied: “no need that you learn, you are already a taught kid”.

This is the beginning of Abdullah Ibn Massoud’s story with islam.

The blessed man was only the prophet (S), and his companion was “al seddiq” (Abou baker Al seddiq) (r). They were in their way out of Makkah, as Quraish persecution got tight on them.

On the same way as the kid loved the prophet (s) and his companion, these two in their turn got impressed of the kid’s sense of trustworthiness, and expected all the good to be at his side.

It was only a short time that Abdullah Ibn Massoud got converted to Islam, and offered the prophet (s) to be his servant.

Since that time, the kid was shifted from being a shepherd to being a servant of the best of all the creation, the prophet (S).

So Abdullah Ibn Massoud remained for a long time at the service of the prophet (s), keen on always learning from him being with him wherever he goes…

Abdullah Ibn Massoud, got brought up at the prophet’s house, and acquired so much of the prophet’s characteristics.

Abdullah Ibn Massoud learned so much about Islam, and was the best Quran reader, and best knowing of its meanings, and all that about Allah’s rules (shari’a).

Nothing is more significant in that than the story of a man who came to Omar Ibn Al Khattab, while standing in “ Arafah”, during pilgrimage time and informed him:

- “O Commander of Believers, I came from Al-Koufa, where I have left a man reciting Quran to people by heart”.

Omar got so furious first to hearing this (thinking someone is tricking people as quran readers were few at that time) and asked about who could be that man.  Omar’s anger faded only when the other man replied that the reader was “Abdullah Ibn Massoud”. Omar said that he had not known any reader better that him to still be alive.

Omar continued:

- “ We were once talking at Abu baker’s house at a dinner time, and once we finished, got out, and in our way, we saw from far someone, whom we did not recognize, praying at the mosque. The prophet (s), stop listening to him, after a while he informed us: “Who ever wants to read the quran “fresh” as revealed, had to read it on Ibn Oummi Abd’s way”. After that, Abdullah sat making invocation to which the prophet replied, “May all you asked for come true”.

Omar continued:

- ” On the early morning, I run to Abdullah Ibn Massoud, to announce him the good news as the prophet (s) had blessed all his invocation; to my surprise, I found that Abou Baker had already announced it to him, and again Abou baker did it. Whenever I intend to be the first in doing something good, I always find Abu baker the first to do it before me”.

The knowledge of Abdullah Ibn Massoud was that big. In regard to that, he stated that he had known all the Quran verses and the context they were revealed upon, and their places of revelation, and that if he would hear about anyone else knowing something new, he would have reached him to update himself.

In fact Abdullah was not exaggerating in what he said about himself. Omar Ibn Al Khattab (r), happened to meet in his way a caravan in one of his trips, and it was night. Abdullah Ibn Massoud was among the people of that caravan, without any notice from Omar. So, Omar ordered to ask about where the people are from. Abdullah answered: “from the deep valley”. Omar asked about their destination. Abdullah again replied: ”to the old house (the holy mosque of Makkah)”. Omar inquired if any scholar must be among them, and ordered to ask them about the best verses of the Quran.  Abdullah replied:

-”Allah! There is no god but He,-the Living, the Self-subsisting, Eternal. No slumber can seize Him nor sleep. His are all things in the heavens and on earth. Who is there can intercede in His presence except as He permitteth? He knoweth what (appeareth to His creatures as) before or after or behind them. Nor shall they compass aught of His knowledge except as He willeth. His Throne doth extend over the heavens and the earth, and He feeleth no fatigue in guarding and preserving them for He is the Most High, the Supreme (in glory)” (2/255). Omar again ordered to ask them about the wisest Quran verse that was revealed? And abdullah replied:

“Allah commands justice, the doing of good, and liberality to kith and kin, and He forbids all shameful deeds, and injustice and rebellion: He instructs you, that ye may receive admonition” (90/16).

Omar ordered to ask them again about the most complete meaning of Quran, abdullah replied:

” Then shall anyone who has done an atom's weight of good, see it! And anyone who has done an atom's weight of evil, shall see it.” (7-8/99).

Omar ordered again to ask them about the most frightening verse of Quran:

” Not your desires, nor those of the People of the Book (can prevail): whoever works evil, will be requited accordingly. Nor will he find, besides Allah, any protector or helper.” (123/4). Omar oredered again to ask them what is the most hopeful verses in Quran, Abdullah replied:

” Say: "O my Servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah: for Allah forgives all sins: for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. “ (53/39). Immediately, Omar inquired if Abdullah Ibn Massoud was among them.

Abdullah Ibn Massoud, was not only a reader, scholar, worshipper, and an ascetic, but he was also, a strong, firm, struggler and an risk runner whenever circumstances needed that. It is enough that he was the first to read Quran publicly. It happened that the prophet’s companions who were a persecuted minority at that time, gathered in Makkah and decided that since Quraish tribesmen had never heard quran, there should be a volunteer to make them hearing it, nomatterhow violent they would be to him. Abdullah Ibn Massoud offered to do it. They expressed their fear that their persecution to him would be so ruthless. In fact, they needed someone having strong family and tribal bonds. At least that would help in protecting him in case the situation got worst. Still Abdullah insisted to go and said that the only protector is Allah (swt). Thus he went straight to the mosque face to “maqam Ibrahim” before noontime. While all the Quraish masters and main figures standing around the “Qaaba”, he started reading Quran in a loud voice:

55:1  (Allah) Most Gracious!

55: 2.  It is He Who has taught the Qur'an.

55: 3.  He has created man:

55: 4.  He has taught him speech (and intelligence).

55: 5.  The sun and the moon follow courses (exactly) computed;

55: 6.  And the herbs and the trees - both (alike) prostrate in adoration.

55: 7.  And the Firmament has He raised high, and He has set up the Balance (of Justice),

55: 8.  In order that ye may not transgress (due) balance.

55: 9.  So establish weight with justice and fall not short in the balance.

55:10.  It is He Who has spread out the earth for (His) creatures:

55:11.  Therein is fruit and date-palms, producing spathes (enclosing dates);

55:12.  Also corn, with (its) leaves and stalk for fodder, and sweet-smelling plants.

55:13.  Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?

55:14.  He created man from sounding clay like unto pottery,

55:15.  And He created Jinns from fire free of smoke:

55:16.  Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?

55:17.  (He is) Lord of the two Easts and Lord of the two Wests:

55:18.  Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?

55:19.  He has let free the two bodies of flowing water, meeting together:

55:20.  Between them is a Barrier which they do not transgress:

55:21.  Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?

55:22.  Out of them come Pearls and Coral:

55:23.  Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?

55:24.  And His are the Ships sailing smoothly through the seas, lofty as mountains:

55:25.  Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?

55:26.  All that is on earth will perish:

55:27.  But will abide (for ever) the Face of thy Lord,- full of Majesty, Bounty and Honour.

55:28.  Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?

55:29.  Of Him seeks (its need) every creature in the heavens and on earth: every day in (new) Splendour doth He (shine)!

55:30.  Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?

55:31.  Soon shall We settle your affairs, O both ye worlds!

55:32.  Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?

55:33.  O ye assembly of Jinns and men! If it be ye can pass beyond the zones of the heavens and the earth, pass ye! not without authority shall ye be able to pass!

55:34.  Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?

55:35.  On you will be sent (O ye evil ones twain!) a flame of fire (to burn) and a smoke (to choke): no defence will ye have:

55:36.  Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?

55:37.  When the sky is rent asunder, and it becomes red like ointment:

55:38.  Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?

55:39.  On that Day no question will be asked of man or Jinn as to his sin.

55:40.  Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?

” (1-40/55).

The recitation was going on, and Quraish tribesmen realized it was some of what Muhammad came with. Immediately they rush to him, hitting him to bleeding. He surmounted as much as he could, and after, he went back to his companions who regretted what had happened to him. Still, Abdullah pointed that he was willing to do it again if it was necessary. But this time his companions insisted on his safety and that it was no point to do it again.

Abdullah Ibn Massoud lived up to the third caliphate time of Othman Ibn Affan.

The time he was dying, Othman the caliph asked him:

- “What do you suffer from?”

Abdullah replied: ”from my sins”

-“Do you wish for anything?”

-“Allah’s mercy”.

-“Shall I order you what you owe us from your goods?”

-“ I do not need it”.

-“I will keep it for your daughters after you”.

-“Are you afraid my daughters become poor? I ordered them to read every night sourat “al waki’a” (no 56); I heard the prophet (s) saying:(who ever reads sourat al waki’a every night, never would be in poverty)”.

Abdullah Ibn Massoud died that day at night, while making “zikr”.
At his funeral, so many people, including al Zoubayr Ibn Al Awwam, prayed on him. He was buried in Al baqi’i graveyard
