Surrah Al-Qari'ah

Qari'ah literally means a thing which knocks or strikes.  The Arabs used to say, "the Qari'ah struck" if a disaster occurred.
There is some difference of opinion as to whether this Surrah has 10 or 11 verses.  Some scholars consider verses 1 and 2 to be a single verse, while others consider them separate verses.  Actually, the verses of the the Qur'an were not numbered in the early Qur'anic manuscripts because the Prophet, peace be upon him, did not specify them.  The only chapter of the Qur'an which the Prophet, peace be upon him, specified the number of verses for is Surrah al-Faatihah.

Place of Revelation

This Surrah was revealed after Surrah Quraysh (106).  Ibn Maradawayh collected a narration that Ubn 'Abbaas said, "Surrah al-Qari'ah was revealed in Makkah."

Reason for Revelation

Surrah al-Qari'ah describes for the Makkan pagan, and for mankind in general, some of the scenes of the Day of Resurrection.  It explains some of the horrors of that day and the helplessness of mankind in order to make man reflect on his end.  The final day will come when man least expects it, like a knocker at his door.  Thus, he is encouraged to prepare for that day by accepting true faith and by doing righteous deeds.

Allah the Al-Mighty said:
  1. Al-Qaari'ah
  2. What is al-Qaari'ah

In this Surrah, Allah takes the idiom al-Qaari'ah (the knocker) and used it to create wonder, amazement, worry and fear in the mind of the listener. This was especially important in Makkah in the early days of Islam becuase the pagan Makkans would not listen to the Qur'an.  Allah is asking them what is really the Qaari'ah, and also pointing out that it is not as they had been thinking, but in fact it is much more serious.

3. And what will make you understand what the Qaari'ah is?

Allah asks another rhetorical question about al-Qaari'ah to increase in the listener's mind curiosity about this particular Qaari'ah.  He does it as if to say  that this Qaari'ah is far beyond man's ability to comprehend.  It is in fact, so strange and horrible that man's mind cannot grap its full meaning, so Allah goes on to tell about some of its signs.

4- It is a Day whereon mankind will be like moths scattered about.
5- And the mountains will be like carded wool.

Due to sudden and unexpectedly of striking Hour, people will get confounded and they run randomly to escape like a swarm of moths.  In other verse Allah the Almighty said," ... As if they were locusts spread abroad." (54:7).   And Due to the strong striking, huge and high mountains will become heaped sand on the earth like carded wool.

In these two verses Allah showed  us two examples that we may face in our life.  We may see mountains fall down, due to earth quake. And sometime we may see swarms of locusts or moths.     This show the terribleness of the Day of Resurrection and what will happen in that Day.

6-  Then as for him whose balance (of good deeds) will be heavy
7-  He will live a pleasant life (in Paradise).
8-  But as for him whose balance (of good deeds) will be light,
9-  He will have his home in Hawiyah (pit, i.e. Hell).
10- And what will make you know what it is?
11- (It is) a fiercely blazing Fire!

Now its the deeds judgment.  Who has good deeds that outbalance, Allah will let him enter Jannah (Paradise).  But whose bad deeds outbalance, He will fall in the hellfire on his head.  And the hellfire will be blazing.  Abu Hurayrah narrated: "When Allah's Messenger, peace be upon him, said, 'Your [ordinary] fire is one of 70 portions of the Hellfire,' someone commented, 'O Messenger of Allah, would it [i.e. ordinary fire] not be sufficient [to burn the wrongdoers]?'  At that, Allah's Messenger, peace be upon him, said, 'The Hellfire has 69 more portions than ordinary [worldly] fire, and all of them are as hot as this [worldly fire].'" (Al-Bukhari).

Sahih Bukhari

Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, When one of you looks at someone who is superior to him in property and appearance, he should look at someone who is inferior to him.
